Know who is on the Phone
I was 22 years old, fresh out of college and at the new job for about 10 months. I was a customer service representitve for a company the manufactured computerized sign equipment. Early on in the job I developed a friendship with a guy named Mike in the Accounting Department who had the same sense of humor I had. We would talk a couple times a week on the phone, while at work and we would tell each other jokes. This guy would also call me from time to time pretending to be someone else.......we would laugh.......until.......
One Friday afternoon I am sitting at my desk working diligently and the phone rings. I answer it in my cheery customer service tone. The gentleman on the other end says " Hello this is David Jones, I was told by Hope in digitizing that you could help me with some font information." Well David Jones is the new company lawyer who just happens to be the son of the owner of the company that I was employed with. I, in my on little mind think to myself this is NOT David Jones it is Mike from accounting trying to be funny......................so I say.........................."If I sleep with you, will you get me a raise?" Not a chuckle, just a short period of silence as the man on the other end of the phone continues to tell me what he was looking for. Well as I realize that it IS David Jones on the phone and NOT Mike my mind starts to shut down and I am not listening or understanding at all what the company lawyer and son of the owner is looking for. I begin to sweat and my office walls start to move. I hang up the phone.
I compose myself and run upstairs to a senior manager who I respect. He also happens to have the same sense of humor. I tell him what just transpired. He looked at me with his head cocked and a perplexed look and said " No Peggy, you did not!" and I looked back at him and said " Yes, Tim I did!" Tim goes on to tell me what I need to do to make the situation better which was to get the information Daivd was looking for FAST! Then to call him with the information, but to appologize first.
Since my mind completely shut down and I was not listening to a word David was saying to me, I needed to call Hope in digitizing to see just what David was looking for. Hope was of great help! I got all the information and made the big call. I said " Hello David, this is Peggy. I want to appologize for our last conversation. I obviously thought you were someone else." Then I proceded to give him what he was looking for. Well David said nothing but thank you.
I did nothing for the next week, but sit in my office working very hard and waiting for someone from Human Resources to come get me to tell me I have been fired. That never happened. I have sinced learned to always know for sure who is on the other end of the phone!

Oh...my...gosh. I love "foot in mouth" stories. That is hilarious. I particularly like the line "my mind starts to shut down and I am not listening or understanding at all..." Also "I begin to sweat and my office walls start to move." Very funny stuff. Thanks for sharing, Peggy!
