I was 26 at the time. To put it mildly I had had my share of bad relationships. I was a middle school teacher in Voorhees,a town in South Jersey and my friend Linda and I decided we needed to get away for Spring Break. She too had just had a romp with Mr. Wrong and we both just needed to relax. Her father had a condo down in Hilton Head so we decided to go on a road trip! The 11 hours down went quickly and when we arrived it was a balmy 87 degrees and the pool was open. We headed for the Tiki bar where we met a group of teachers from New York. We traded stories about over-privileged kids, monster parents and the faulty education system over several drinks. At the end of the night one of the women said, “You know Kris, a couple of the guys we teach with are coming down later and I think one of them would be perfect for you!” I thought to myself,” sure….just what I need, no thank you…I’ve given up on men, at least for this week.” I said,” Sure Donna, whatever you say” and thought nothing of it.
The next day came and we were at the pool by ten in the morning, it was beautiful out. The day progressed and the ladies from New York joined us by the pool where we all just wanted to relax and soak up the sun. Around 2:00 I heard Donna say, “Here they come”. To this day I can still see him walking towards me. Green bathing suit, white t-shirt, sun glasses and a towel wrapped around his neck. “Kris, this is John, John…Kris,” Donna said. I said Hi and he grunted. Well wasn’t that a pleasant greeting, he was just like the rest of them. I overheard one of the other guys say he was so hung over he could barely see so assumed this John guy was in the same boat.
Around 5:00 I yelled out to the group, “Anybody ready for a margarita?” Much to my surprise John mumbled, “I am” and he got up to join me. We got to the bar and the pivotal moment occurred. He took off his sunglasses and revealed the most beautiful ice blue eyes I had ever seen…I mean WOW. From that point I was done. We sat at the bar and talked for what seemed like hours. We were both teachers, we were both coaches, we both played sports in college…..we just fit!
We spent the remainder of the week inseparable! We went dancing, had dinner at the top of the Harbor Town light house and watched the stars. He was charming, sincere, fun and a gentleman. I recall being so amazed how much we had in common and how well we got along. Then the week came to a close. I remember crying to my friend Linda when he left to go back to New York, “I know I’m never going to see him again!” I cried the whole drive home, I mean sobbed uncontrollably. When we got back to Linda’s house we told her Mom about the week and she took out a map to show me how close Queens is to Voorhees. But he had to call first right? He called that very night and came to my house that very night!! Our relationship was a whirlwind. We met in April, he moved down to New Jersey in August, we were engaged in November and got married the following August! Twelve years, two children and a treasure chest full of memories later I am happy to say he is still my knight in shining armor!
